Excerpt of III. Mountain Truths from Les glaces éternelles

“Lovely Forms” is a short work for unaccompanied six-part choir setting a fragment of William Wordsworth’s 1798 poem “Lines Composed a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey.” This piece is excerpted from a much larger work for sinfonietta, choir, and electronics titled Les glaces éternelles. The full piece explores the experience of sublimity in nature, especially when confronting extremes of scale. Glaciers and their slow, yet tangible impact on the land exemplify that which is much larger than us, while the tree-like branching of our own neurons reflects how we are part of nature, and the structures which occur in our bodies are reflected in the world around us. Situated at the very end of the piece, “Lovely Forms” acts as a denouement and offers a sobering warning that if the damaging effects of anthropogenic climate change continue, the majesty of glaciers could vanish entirely, persisting only in memory. Sonically, the piece emphasizes fricative consonants, extending the sounds within words and creating a sense of reverb which is embedded in the voices themselves.
